Throughout
its 60 year history, Baldwin has been the world leader in the
development of brass forgings for the architectural hardware
industry.
Baldwin's forged brass product is manufactured through a
process which improves the tensile strength of an item by 250%
over conventional castings.
The manufacturing process begins with a brass rod or billet
machine-cut to the required length. After the billet is heated
to 1400 degrees, it is placed in a specially designed set of
dies shaped to the desired configuration. Special forging
presses for nonferrous metals exert tremendous pressure on the
heated billet forcing it to flow into the desired shape; a
procedure requiring expert craftspeople. The molecules of the
metal are compressed and bound tightly together, producing a
product double the strength of the original billet and free of
the imperfections, pockmarks, or air bubbles often found in
castings. The strength and blemish-free surface are essential
for the jewel-like polished finish.
When excess metal is trimmed away, the forging is routed
through separate coining, milling, drilling and tapping
stations to produce a surface ready for the polishing
operations. Each piece travels through an extensive series of
buffing operations to achieve a brilliant luster. Finally,
every piece receives an electrostatically applied enamel
coating through a positive/ negative attraction process, which
completely envelopes the entire perimeter of the item. The
item is then baked at high temperatures to complete the
sealing process. Due to this unique procedure, Baldwin
products do not need further polishing beyond periodic
cleaning with a damp cloth.
